The Trouble with Dead Bodies

THE TROUBLE WITH DEAD BODIES

A Hale Mary Mystery

KATRINA KYLE

Review by Author Roy Murry

Anyone can be a snoop by being put in a situation where someone is killed in their circle of acquaintances. If you have a vested interest in the dead person, you want to know what happened.

What happens to Hale is the above. Instead of letting the police do their job, she goes over the top in her sleuthing because her pro-quarterback brother and possible client are implicated.

The murderer is closer than she thought, and in the end, there could be more deaths. This story had too many possible killers; however, halfway through the narrative, the reader may figure out the case.

As the first book in a series, I give it four stars. It features good characters and a snappy reading pace, but the storyline becomes bogged down in unnecessary details.

ELL CYNE SERIES

BLANKLEY CHORPENNING

Review by Author Roy Murry

'Young Adult' novels interest me because they allow me to see what the new generation reads. Are vampires a thing? I guess so.

Ell is a reader of human souls for Vampires, which is the first step before the vamp sucks blood. Her capability is questioned, and the higher-ups want verification, starting with her relationship with her twin sister's soul.

The story offers a new twist in the genre and is well-crafted, featuring a Vampire protector for Ell. She is being pursued by nefarious elements who want her soul discredited.

The events leading to the gripping ending are unusual but somewhat tricky to follow. However, the readers' attention is kept glued to the page.

HANNAH HOWE

Review by Author Roy Murry

During WWII, Zigzag is a British double agent, and Eve is asked to leave her lavish lifestyle to help. She has the contacts to get the agent from France to Spain through the mountains.

Her task is difficult because of the weather, the people who interfere, the events, and the agent. Each twist and turn leaves the reader on the edge.

When the end comes, the reader will think, "What was that all about?" The goal is not reached in a thrilling, deadly ending.

EVE'S WAR is a quick novel that leaves the reader wanting more. There are twelve novels in The Heroines of SOE Series.

Flair for Chardonnay

A FLAIR for CHARDONNAY

A Sadie Kramer Flair Mystery

DEBORAH GARNER

Review by Author Roy Murry

Sadie is not the person one would think of as a sleuth. She is a flamboyant woman, a chocolate addict, and the owner of a dress shop.

Her shop, FLAIR, is next door to a chocolate boutique, whose owner is also part of a family winery. Sadie visits the winery for a weekend getaway when a murder occurs.

Sadie's relationship with the owner of the chocolate boutique gets her involved. After making several trips to the winery and meeting all the family members and police involved with the murder, she solves the case using logic that none of the people saw or investigated—an outsider is the criminal.

That outsider is in plain sight but not considered.

Easy reading to follow.

CHASING JUSTICE

CHASING JUSTICE

Piper Anderson Series Book One

DANIELLE STEWART

Review by Author Roy Murry

This novel is a suspenseful thriller with a background in multiple relationships. Piper sees a crime in progress, which causes her PTSD to move her into action against a criminal.

In her quest, she meets endearing people and a cop who falls in love with her. These people produce new emotions in Piper, which leads to the unraveling of a web of murder, pedophilia, and other crimes.

JUSTICE is entertaining, but the characters' backgrounds are too deep, and the ending leaves the reader hanging. The novel is too long for my taste.

Ms. Stewart leaves the reader with too many questions to contemplate at the dramatic conclusion. Therefore, she brings you into Book Two of the series.

Fish Out of Water

FISH OUT OF WATER

An Ozark Lake Mystery #1

MARC JEDEL

Review by Author Roy Murry

Serendipity is a good word to use for this light mystery. Elizabeth returns to her birthplace with her husband Jonas, the fish out of water, in tow.

A man that Elizabeth fights with when returning to town is murdered. The newbie Sheriff arrests her for the crime.

She and Jonas go a-snooping. Jonas, who has never been in an Arkansas small town, goes about his business, and clues laughing fall on his plate.

This novel is not much of a mystery, but the off-the-wall characters and town community events contribute to a good read. You'll have to read book two to see who dies next.

ELANA JOHNSON

Review by Author Roy Murry

Is texting now a part of contemporary romance comedy? Hillary and Liam text each other, Ms. Johnson's linchpin for romance.

Hillary sends the wrong text to him, and a romance begins. She lives in a Big House with four other women, and Liam is their hunky next-door neighbor.

Hillary is caught up in her career. After the text, she feels obligated to date Liam; from that moment on, love blooms—until Hillary's career takes off.

You'll have to read this well-written Hallmark Ish novel to see which wins: Hillary's career or her love of Liam. The reader will be surprised at the end of this cute novel.

Subtle Art of Not Giving a FUCK

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

MARK MANSON

Review by Author Roy Murry

Does profanity provoke you? If it doesn't, Manson is a provocative writer. In SUBTLE, Manson gives the reader many definitions for using FUCK.

His verbosity may rattle the reader's cage. However, he provides a clear explanation of why one should or should not care based on psychology, which comes through loud and clear.

The reader may discover something about themselves that is negative.

Mr. Manson does not leave you hanging. He provides solutions using biological narratives to engage the reader in one way or another.

This is not a self-help book.

Expresso Shots & Murder Plots 1

Expresso Shots & Murder Plots

AUDREY ALDEN

Review by Author Roy Murry

As with most cozy mysteries, EXPRESSO is a main character-driven novel. Lila, a coffee shop and bookstore co-owner, is a journalist-type sleuth.

After a wealthy man gives a festival speech, he dies in the crowd. Only Lila believes that the event is murder.

Lila naively questions and upends her friends and the police chief to the point of getting herself arrested. In the end, Lila is correct, but she becomes a target.

Amy, Lila's friend and co-owner of the shop, and Lila's dog, Finn, are coconspirators in her shenanigans. From the ending events of this novel, Lila's friends will help her solve a crime in the next book of this series - they are all well-defined characters.

This cozy mystery is a quick read for the mystery buff.

DON'T TRUST ME

Hamlet Book One

JESSICA LYNCH

Review by Author Roy Murry

The theme of love and betrayal is at the heart of DON'T TRUST ME, a story that will leave you emotionally invested and questioning the lengths one would go for love.

Tessa Sullivan and her husband Jack's marriage is in turmoil, so they decide to go on a second honeymoon. They find themselves in the small town of Hamlet's Inn instead of their resort's destination.

After a heated argument, Tessa leaves the room for a drink, only to return the next morning to a shocking discovery- Jack is dead. She was in jail for DUI.

The story starts here when the sheriff gets involved. However, the crime a little woman like Tessa could not have committed sends the town of two hundred into a spin.

If not her, who killed Jack? The sheriff believes Tess did it. But how? The sheriff is talking with Tess and Maria about a renegade deputy who is in love with Tessa when a shot is fired.

The twists and turns of this novel keep the reader engaged. When the end comes, one will be amazed.

The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know

ADAM GRANT

Review by Author Roy Murry

The author, Adam Grant, is a professor of Organizational Psychology at Wharton. I graduated from the JFK Psychological Warfare Center, Fort Bragg, NC 1968.

Now that you have our credentials, I understand why Mr. Grant has a bestseller here. Although his writing and discourse on the human psyche are understandable to someone like me, unschooled psychology readers may find this read boring.

However, if you are inquisitive, learning to manage people, or want to know what you don't, this book will point you in the right direction. Mr. Grant motivates the reader to excel in their endeavors.

'How do you know what you know?' is another question.

THE GOOD GUY

DEAN KOONTZ

Review by Author Roy Murry

Tim, the good guy, has chosen to save a life. Linda, the person he has decided to save, is in the crosshairs of the evil guy, a paid assassin.

Tim and the assassin play cat and mouse through various mishaps, trying to decide who controls Linda's fate. The reader knows who the evil one is, but Tim is just a mason, right?

NYT Best-Selling author Koontz writes excellently. He sets the stage for a thriller. However, this being my first read of his novels, I found it lacking something. Also, it had too many of the evil person's digressions.

Overall, this thriller has exciting moments that keep the reader involved, but the ending is not one of them.

Amish Herbal Secrets

AMISH HERBAL SECRETS

The Modern Heritage 2025 Edition

Miriam Yoder

Review by Author Roy Murry

I found this jewel of a book that was free on Kindle for a short period. You should buy the paperback so you can better mark the portions you need.

The Amish have a holistic way of living that will help the average American to live ten percent longer than the public. I am at their average life span of 75.

There are herbal teas for almost every illness or human deficiency. Some of their brews include green and ginseng teas for energy, detox teas, and peppermint tea for digestion.

This kind of book always recommends eating veggies, exercising, and living healthily. The Amish do it all from scratch: they grow their herbs and vegetables, prepare their brews, and store them for use later.

I highly recommend this book to young people (25 - 45). Go live a better life.

From this first-day event, Mercy, a mystery writer, snoops into everyone in the cottage court's life. This small town's lone handsome detective keeps arresting Mercy for whatever reason with cause - she snoops in the wrong places.

Mercy and Lizzy's adventure ends with a surprising ending, clearing Mercy of wrongdoings. However, she did snoop illegally, and her M.O. will continue in the series.

Key elements of this series are sisterly love, diversity of characters, the start of a relationship, and close community involvement. IRISH BOOKSHOP meets all the requirements of an excellent series.

Ms. Rise's FBI Agent, Tori Spark, goes on a whirlwind journey with her partner to unravel an unusual crime. Unfortunately for the reader, this mystery thriller's investigation goes off track too many times.

Agent Spark's skills and Ms. Rise's knowledge of investigating a crime are lacking. However, in the end, things fall into place for the agent.

On the other hand, Ms. Rise's writing skills are excellent but a little complicated to understand without reading book one. If you like an FBI series, start with book one. 'Amidst the Ruins' is book two in this series.

Independent Author's Reviews of THE AUDUBON CAPER

5 Star Reviews of The Audubon Caper

The Audubon Caper is a hair-raising, eye-opening story you won't miss, particularly if you want to glimpse how one of our intelligence agencies conducts some of its covert operations.

Danny Kemp, author of The Desolate Garden, wrote:

I have read this book and can happily recommend it. It is a thoroughly enjoyable story told with conviction and expertise.

Rags Daniels, the author of  Lallapaloosa, wrote:

'The 'Audubon Caper' is 'an utterly compelling, riveting, factual roller coaster ride.

I will devour my hat if it doesn't on the big screen.

PS; I guarantee you will hate reaching the end.

Faith Helen Mortimer, author of many mystery novels, wrote:

R. Murry has written a good book here, with plenty to excite and interest the reader and add reality to the story. The fluency and pace kept me on edge until the end. This was a most enjoyable read; if you like thrillers, this one could be for you.

Seumas Gallacher, author of SAVAGE PAYBACK, says:
I've been seduced by a storyline from the first page, as I was with The Audubon Caper.

the back cover of the book:

"The "Audubon Caper is a page-turner."

Vo" da Norwood, author of many Erotic novels, wrote:

This TRUE story is filled with SEX and LIES. I LOVED IT. All the accounts in this exciting mystery are true, and the facts are there. Am I right? I DON'T!!!

Theresa Brau, author of Groom and Doom and English teacher, wrote:

R. Murry Murry's Audubon Caper is a fast-paced story. There are so many things going on in this creative nonfiction tale. One of the most extraordinary things about this book is that it's based on a true story…

Zoe Saadia, author of HIGHLANDER and many historical novels, wrote:

I had meant to pick "Audubon Caper" for some time, but when I peeked into the sample chapter, I knew I had to read this book. It gripped me from the beginning, the author addressing the reader in the friendly conversational way of someone telling you his story…

Cynthia J Smith, poet and author of Voices in My Head, wrote:

Mr. Murry writes so smoothly that the story flows from past to present without a ripple. His scenes of sex and drugs evoke the activities of that era but are written to add to the story instead of becoming a significant piece of it.

Annie is a widow, a clairvoyant dealing in financial matters, and becomes a spy to find the murderer of a client. She is a lady who becomes a maid to solve the crime.

In her Victorian journey, Annie teams up with a lawyer named Nate. There are sparks of endearment between the two as Annie breaks all the norms of women in the late 1800s.

The supporting and involved characters round out an interesting plot seldom used in a mystery. Ms. Locke makes it work with entertaining conversations, detailed background, and writing that keep the reader wondering what comes next.

LEA COLL

Review by Author Roy Murry

Hadley is running away from her controlling, wealthy New Orleans father. Cades has shunned his family after the death of his soul mate.

These two characters meet under unusual circumstances in Annapolis, Maryland, Cade's hometown. They are neighbors; she is a lawyer, and he is a martial arts instructor and a construction company owner.

Their relationship begins with legal business and blooms into something neither anticipated. Both are running away from personal commitments: Hadley is not standing up to her father, and Cade is not letting go of his grief.

Ms. Coll brings them together in a compelling story with dialog that engages the reader. The plot and characters set up book 2 in this series, which reads like a novella.

It's a good Romantic read.

MOON RITUALS

MOON RITUALS: Harness Lunar Power for Manifestation, Healing, and Spiritual Growth: A Practical Guide to Lunar Witchcraft for Modern Witches and Spiritual Seekers

ANN WESTWOOD

Review by Author Roy Murry

The title of this book is A Mouth-Full. Let me boil Moon Rituals down for you: the book is a self-help exercise.

Although Ms. Westwood's prose is intriguing, many exercises are repetitive, especially when the moon's reflection on the earth changes. If the reader needs a crutch or system to improve their life, following and using the moon's waxing and journaling your activities may help you develop a bright future.

Over my adult seventy-six years, I have read many self-help books. Unless you care to use witchcraft or the moon to guide your life, I recommend you read the non-fiction The Power of the Subconscious Mind before this book.

HOLIDAYS can be MURDER.

CONNIE SHELTON

Review by Author Roy Murry

HOLIDAYS is the first book I have read by Ms. Shelton. I am impressed with the story's setup. However, the mystery is easy to figure out - her neighbor's mother-in-law is killed.

The characters are well-developed for a series, and the main character, Charlie Parker, controls the action throughout the play. She finds clues while the detective in her company, her brother, is not involved.

Those follow-ups take Charlie in circles and lead her back to square one, where the answer lies. The adventure is enjoyable for the reader.

THE DEMON-HAUNTED WORLD

CARL SAGA

Reviewed by Author Roy Murry

If you have an INQUISITIVE mind, this discourse on science vs. the human race will make you want to read more of Carl Saga's analysis of the world around you. Unfortunately, he died in 1996, but fortunately, he left many works. Read COSMOS, as I did.

This book is not light reading for the beach unless you read one chapter, put the book down, and contemplate what you read. These 482 pages of controversial information are appropriate to today's events as they were when written.

USA Note: Our founding fathers "were self-sufficient, not requiring careers as politicians or lobbyists to make a living." Also..."Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers (Career Politicians) of the people alone."

With some gems of observation, such as the above, Mr. Sagan contends that Jeffersonian science is the way to defeat the world's haunted demons.

MOZZARELLA MURDER

A Rolling Dough Pizza Truck

Mystery Book 1

R.M. MURPHY

Review by Author Roy Murry

Denny is starting a new life operating a pizza truck and snooping part-time. While picking up MOZZARELLA cheese at a friend's Cheese Shop, a famous man is found dead behind the counter.

Since he has time to spend and it is his old stomping grounds, he starts investigating. During his snooping, he meets old friends.

If I hear that puppy Yorkies are cute again, I will bark. Mr. Murphy overdoes the dog bit and does little character-building on the sleuthing.

This book is a short mystery. There is doubt about what is going on or who did it. Only one event the police overlooked reveals the truth.

It is a quick, somewhat enjoyable read, but as in book 1, it is not among the best. But if you love food, Yorkies, and cozy murder mysteries, this is for you.

THE WAR ON WARRIORS:

Behind the Betrayal of the Men Who Keep Us Free

PETE HEGSETH

Review by Author Roy Murry

As an ex-Army Special Forces Vietnam Veteran, from Mr. Hegseth's biography and this book, Pete has earned his STRIPS, as we say in the Army, to become the Secretary of the DoD. During his confirmation, the Senators will use 'War on Warriors' for and against him. I am for confirmation.

Pete Hegseth's book addresses pressing issues such as the erosion of the military's mission by 'wokeness' and leftist ideas. His discussion on the current state of war engagement versus the ideal approach is particularly urgent. Afghanistan?

He explains his military experiences, concluding that the forty-four United States generals must change their direction philosophically and return to the reality of war engagement, or they should retire. He may soon be able to force some of them into retirement, which I agree to.

Pete Hegseth's writing in 'The War on Warriors' is clear, understandable, and deeply convincing. If you are concerned about the future direction of the United States, this book is an essential read that will undoubtedly influence your perspective.

The Swan Maiden

THE SWAN MAIDEN

G. Lawrence

Review by Author Roy Murry

In 1540, Anna of Cleves was to become the Queen of England, marrying the Tudor King Henry VIII, who had three wives. Anna's evaluation of her situation in becoming Queen mentions what happened surrounding them.

Anna tells her story in the first person. She describes her new world by interjecting the pros and cons of her family's and England's politics, new friendships, and the king's physical and mental abilities.

Anna's story is compelling, shocking, heartwarming, and a testament to her strength and resilience. She is a survivor with a strong mind, leading to her fate under the power of an erratic king.

G. Lawrence's writing about this historical English event will keep the readers turning the page even though they may have read the Wikipedia version. This version is an eloquent and entertaining one.

If you like FAIRY TALES, this novel has three in it. Each tale has the same three main characters: Olivia, a woman in denial; Jerron, a man wanting to return home; and Nancy, a controlling fairy godmother.

Olivia and Jerron are in a realm of confusion because of individual accidents. The two meet in one tale, and according to Nancy, they must learn more about love to go home and be released from her control.

Olivia and Jerron learn their lessons gradually, but she learns faster. She returns home, and the tales are over, but there is no Jerron on her return.

This return leads to a heartwarming ending that will be enjoyed by those who love fairy tales and romance novels. It is a well-written and exciting novel leading into a series.
