Wars kill people and
displace them. During World War II, England's children were sent away from
London because of the German Blitzkrieg. Many are placed in orphanages.
Shilling Granger is about eight children living with an unqualified housemother named Clara in a government-run home. Clara is self-absorbed until events change her.
The individual characters of those children transform Clara and the orphanage into a loving environment with conflict from the outside world. Troubles arise, leading to the destruction of their community by the government.
THE ORPHANAGE has many stories to follow, but the central theme is compelling and heartwarming - a child needs love to grow healthy. The author does an excellent job of portraying that, using multiple personalities.
