The person stolen in
the night is thirteen-year-old Phoebe, sleeping in a tent with her
nine-year-old sister Tess, who sees the kidnapper. Later that night, Phoebe died
at the hands of a pervert.
A man is caught based on Tess's identification and other evidence. He is tried and killed by the government. This thriller comes alive twenty years later when doubt arises - did he do the crime?
Tess and her family say he did. Some new evidence leads to doubt, and Tess investigates to prove her position, leading to twists and turns.
When the doubt festers, logic and tempers arise, putting Tess and her son in a deadly event. That and other events produce other crimes.
MacDonld's writing is well constructed, but the reader will find the story unbelievable in this country, 2023.
